Experience
As an experienced tutor of three years in a one-on-one setting, I have cultivated a sense of teaching that employs head, hand, and heart. Most students learn through their own internal motivations rather than through compulsion and, as a teacher, my task is to guide students as individuals through their learning and allow it to unfold naturally. I have had great success utilizing a progressive education program that benefits each specific student, gifted or otherwise, by highly personalizing education and accounting for each individual's personal goals. I have taught my students in many subjects, but most prominently reading comprehension, writing, literature, grammar, study skills, Spanish, and Math. I have been a life-long speaker of Spanish and have taken university level classes to refine my learning of the language. I have a natural competence for math and a tremendous passion for English. I love working with kids because I can identify with their avid curiosity, and I understand the importance of stimulating their imagination while developing their intellect. During my stay at the University of California, Irvine, I enveloped myself in the study of the humanities. I majored in English, with an emphasis in creative writing, and I minored in Film and Media. I was a journalist and programmer for the student run film committee called F.A.D.A (Film Arts Drama Alliance), where I wrote and monitored all writing disseminated by ancillary committees, as well as assisted in creating the visual appearance of the film festival at the end of the year. Apart from tutoring in the evening, for the past year I was also the head editor at a publishing company for a set of magazines. I ran an editorial staff that published two magazines a month. The editorial staff found all content, edited columns, wrote features, conducted interviews, and recruited contributors. I think the humanities teach one that self-expression is vital to individual growth, and I hope to encourage that in my sessions. I also currently work for Franklin Educational Services, a prestigious tutoring company.
