Experience

I am currently a second grade teacher and have over ten years of experience in education. Teaching has always been my passion, and I have worked with hundreds of children ranging from preschool to middle-school aged. Tutoring allows me to make one-on-one connections with students that can be harder to do when working in a whole-group setting. I enjoy seeing the fast-paced progress my tutees make and watching their confidence grow. I hold my Master's Degree in Teaching from Southern Oregon University. When teaching math, I create and teach lessons that incorporate activities designed to empower my students. I teach my students that problems can be solved in a variety of ways which helps strengthen their critical thinking skills. Mistakes are part of learning in math, and I create an environment where students feel safe to take healthy learning risks. I help my students develop strong number sense and learn to be efficient mathematicians. Whether students are in the “learning to read” or “reading to learn” developmental stage, I have the skills to help them become stronger readers. My lessons include phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, comprehension and vocabulary. Students will learn that writing is a process, and I incorporate a variety of teaching strategies to help my learners develop a strong writer’s voice. Phonics, and learning to decode words is a crucial component of a child's success with reading. By teaching letter-sound recognition, consonant blends, and developing lessons with explicit teaching, my students will be able to sound out new and unfamiliar words and have stronger comprehension of the text. Thank you for your consideration and please feel free to reach out to me with any questions you may have or to schedule our first lesson.
